Zapraszamy na seminarium dr Zbigniewa Rozynka, ICHF PAN. Seminarium Zakładu Fizyki Biomedycznej odbędzie się 2014-11-20 w godz. 13:15-14:00 w sali 1.40. Seminarium technik tworzenia mikrootoczek polimerowych, które potencjalnie mogą być wykorzystywane do dostarczania leków w sposób wybiórczy. Prowadzący przedstawi też propozycje projektów na prace magisterskie do wykonania we współpracy z ICHF PAN.

A versatile platform based on the wide-gap II-VI material system has been developed in recent years that allows for the realisation of various photonic nanostructures for different applications. By integration of emitters like quantum wells or quantum dots (QDs) into optical resonators (i.e. microcavities with planar or three-dimensional optical confinement), the optical and electronic density of states can be tailored with a high flexibility. These building blocks can be combined in order to fabricate structures for basic research like e.g. the investigation of light-matter interaction in the weak and strong coupling regime or for devices like surface emitting lasers (VCSEL). An important feature of this material system is the fact that room-temperature operation can be achieved e.g. for a QD-based single photon source due to the comparatively high band offsets that can be realised using II-VI heterostructures.

Photonic Crystals have displayed their vivid properties in the colours of butterflies, beetles and precious stones before they were discovered by Man. An understanding of their one dimensional properties led to the prediction of three dimensional properties in the mid 1980’s. Their wide spread adoption in two dimensions have seen their most useful applications. Metamaterials, although used in one form as stained glass since 4th century AD, has undergone a similar epiphany in understanding. However to-date, their most useful applications have not exploited their full potential. The talk will give an introduction to both Photonic Crystals and Metamaterials and look at some of their current uses.

Solid-state physics and quantum electrodynamics, with its relativistic (massless) particles, meet in steadily expanding class of materials. Those include, 1D carbon nanotubes, 2D graphene or topological-insulator surfaces, and most recently, the systems with 3D conical dispersion - with Weyl, Dirac or Kane fermions. In this talk, I will review how the linear dispersion impacts the (magneto-) optical properties of these systems.

Polaritons are amazing quasiparticles originating from the coupling of photons with excitons (electron-hole pairs in semiconductors). Polariton condensates may be created both spontaneously through a “standard” phase transition towards a Bose Einstein condensate, or be resonantly driven with a well-defined initial phase, speed and spatial distribution.
